Event Branding: Film Festival
BRIEF:
Design a multi-channel campaign to promote or address a singular topic or issue. This campaign addressed efforts to increase interest in STEM education in non-urban schools in an effort to reduce high-school dropout rates in Washington State. Based on my research, I devised a 3-day science fiction film festival targeting 13-18 year olds to promote the importance of science and eduction and to encourage young people to finish high school by experiencing the joy and wonder of some of the greatest science fiction films of all time.
SOLUTION:
As the festival contains many classic “sci-fi” films, my solution was to create a visual language that invokes the futurism of the genre while remaining inviting and perhaps even hopeful. The odd shapes were meant to be evocative and mysterious while not necessarily identifiable. This combined with the color gradients represent the malleability of time while the burst of bright colors and clean, minimalist overall design is meant to underscore the idea that while a dark, dystopian future is a common theme in science fiction, the future is in fact what we make of it. It required me to design across multiple channels, the curation and organizing of the film schedule, speakers and themes as well as designing the mobile site, e-tickets and collateral. Although originally a student final ‘campaign’ project while a student at Shillington Design College, the project was pitched for an educational non-profit in serving the Pacific Northwest at the encouragement of my instructor.
